“Stow your gear” is the new “suit up”.
Hey, everyone. superboy13 here. If you’ve read any of my posts at all in our awesome forum, you’ll know that I’m a massive Joss Whedon fan. So, naturally, when news broke out that he was doing a superhero movie, I was stoked. And then THE AVENGERS happened. I loved it. It’s quite possibly my favorite superhero movie (and if it isn’t, it’s definitely my most watched.) So yeah, that gives you some background.
Now, AGENTS OF SHIELD. I love the premise, but I was a little skeptical of the showrunners: Whedon Jr. and Tancharoen are great writers – if not a little on the green side – and with the J-man doing his Marvel stint, how much time can he really put into the show? Sure, we’ve got ANGEL vet Jeffrey Bell involved and SMALLVILLE alum Jeph Loeb, so that’s a plus… well, the SMALLVILLE thing? Kinda 😉
Ahem, sorry. I digress…
AGENTS OF SHIELD!
This was probably one of the best pilots I’ve seen in a while. It did a great job of setting up both characters and plot (Whedon is fantastic with the former, he’s good with the latter) for the season. It was very much in line with THE AVENGERS when it comes to tone and approach – and that’s something I was delighted to see – not only because I loved the movie, but because nowadays it’s very hard to come across something comic-book related that is fun. Looks-wise, it stays in the same vein of THE AVENGERS and, dear Zod, DP David Boyd (Whedon’s FIREFLY DP) loves his shadows. Also, can I get a “hell yeah!” for Bear McCreary?
The cast looks great (well, yeah… they’re a pretty bunch, but that’s not what I mean). My only concern is Brett Dalton (Agent Ward) who, in my opinion, was a bit stiff, and I think he’s still not used to Whedon’s particular style of dialogue. I’ve never been a huge fan of the Coulson character (Gregg) and he kinda feels like wannabe-Fury. He has a few great moments, though, and I can see him growing into being a strong leader. Ming-Na Wen (ER, yo!) was all kinds of awesome. Chloe Bennet as hacker hottie Skye was pretty solid, and I have a weird feeling we’ll be seeing a lot more of her in future Whedon projects. A shout-out to Iain De Caestecker and Elizabeth Henstridge (Leo Fitz and Jemma Simmons, respectively) for their sidekicky awesomeness. (Whedonite sidenote: GUNN! SHEPHERD BOOK!). Finally, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill. We saw a little more of her than in Avengers, naturally, and she nailed it. I really hope we see more of her in the future.
I do have a couple of complaints (or concerns). I know the pilot is supposed to introduce a bunch of things and people, but I didn’t feel the stakes. There was a walking bomb inside a train station full of people and, even know I knew it’d be okay, I didn’t FEEL it wouldn’t. And I should. I did, though, totally fall for that headshot.
I also hope that they don’t stretch out the Coulson mystery for too long (I’m looking at you, How I Met Your Mother!).
This show, so far, has definitely done more right than wrong, and they’ve definitely gained a loyal viewer here (yeah, like there was any real chance I WOULDN’T). I just hope it can grow into something as good as BUFFY or the often-overlooked ANGEL.
P.S.: Where we’re going, we don’t NEED roads…
